Self cleaning (reverse polarity) salt water chlorinators work by electrolysis which is small amounts of DC (direct current) power passing across the plates of of the salt water chlorinators electrode (Cell).  As the positively charged electrode plate creates the chlorine it attracts a calcium build up which deposits on the cell plate. When the chlorinator reverses the polarity automatically the positively charged electrode plate now has a negative charge and repels the built up calcium which in turn cleans the cell plates.
